Mamat dan baju barunya

Akhirnya yang ditunggu-tunggu telahpun tiba.  From China.  Comel tak?

Kenapa ya perlu di'apparel'kan binatang-binatang nih?  Not that they need to wear any - especially bila Allah dah kurniakan bulu as their permanent baju and this is Malaysia Negara yang panas.  I suppose, for my part at least, pet is part of family.  My cats are a big part of my life.  And I love them.  Kita bagi dia nama, kita pakaikan dia baju dan seluar.. to make them 'human' just like us.

Tomato: Kesabaran itu manis (kot?)

Tomato adalah satu daripada tanaman kegemaran saya; saya minat tanam tomato.  I have a few varieties (seeds lah hhahaha) in store and dok cuba tanam-tanam.  My luck has so far been iffy when it comes to yielding harvest.  Tang tanam tu OK but most of my tomato plants will be faced with problems lah - mealy bugs (mostly), ants, mildew, leaf borer, root rot, fruit fly..macam-macam lah and eventually mati.  I notice that yang boleh harap, hanyalah variety tomato cherry or kuning.  Yang kaler merah, tak berapa nak memberangsangkan.  Tak apa lah.. sedap juga.. 

A couple of weeks ago, saya semai 5 benih tomato dalam satu bekas (cawan polisterin), satu benih, satu variety: hillbilly, giant Belgium, pineapple, mortgage lifter dan purple Cherokee.  Selepas 5 hari, 2 benih sprouted - tapi tak tau which variety - and I thought, only 2 je lah yang bakal hidup tapi what do you know, lepas 2 minggu, tup-tup, muncul satu sprout.. heh?

Sila rujuk pada gambar di atas nih.  Ada satu sprout comel je yang baru muncul di celah dua anak pokok tomato.  So, para pembaca budiman sekalian, jangan jadi tak sabar macam saya.  Some seeds do take a loooooonnnng time to sprout, lelagi benih yang dah agak lama.

Yesterday, saya dah pun transplant 2 anak pokok tomato tersebut leaving this one lonely sprout dalam cawan.  Bagi dia space untuk tumbuh.  Dan lagi 2 seeds dalam cawan tu.. tak tau la nasibnya, mungkin dah terikut dengan dua anak pokok yang saya alih or mungkin masih ada dalam cawan nih.  We'll see lah..

A little fixer upper and garden update

Sejak Ramadhan lepas, I had been ignoring my plot.  Most of the vegetables planted dah takde dah.. Actually, sikit je pun hasilnya as it was my first attempt and loads of mishaps happened along the way - it's alright, I don't mind.  Come Syawal, my plot dah macam hapa dah... rumput rumpai nak cecah siku huhuhu... Pokok-pokok dah lama gone lah, such as tomatoes, cucumber (satu pokok je yang Berjaya berbuah), kacang buncis, kacang panjang dah selesai menghasilkan sayuran. Walaupun tak banyak, tapi it was enough for us.  Cili?  Well, I did not have much luck with them. Manjang kena inject dengan lalat buah, so last-last biar gitu je. 

Then sejak awal minggu lepas, kerajinan dah tumbuh semula dalam jiwa ini (ecehhh), so berbekalkan sarung tangan dua hengget beli kt kedai Sentai dan cangkul (cangkul ke???) dua hengget juga (So what, I am a fan of dua hengget items hik hik hik), bermula lah operasi meragut rumput.. and this is what my plot looks like now.. dah agak clear dah.. syukur...

Actually I still have a few pots in the plot.. gambar di bawah ini, serai yang saja ku cucuk dalam pasu bertanah bekas tanam apa ntah, mak lupe.. Alhamdulillah...  after a couple of weeks terus merebak dengan jayanya... Ada juga tabur Baja sikit.. Baja ni elok pulak, beli kat satu nursery ni.. satu kilo RM5 tapi kalau beli satu beg besar 15 kg dapat murah sikit lah perkg.  Bau Baja ni busuk wekkk.. tapi cepat hancur and pokok elok je gemuk..  Ohe thing though, serai kalau tanam dalam bekas kena rajin siram, sebab dia cepat layu...  at least, once every 2 days.  Serai consume banyak air mungkin?

Actually, this is the second pot of serai yang dah besar.. The first pot dah bagi kat adik... I sold the whole pot for RM2 - soh dia bayar duit pasu jadik lah...and the serai yang kt atas ni akan ku bagi kt adik lagi sorang... senang tak payah beli kt pasar, kan?  I have another 3 pots of serai baru tanam, 2 dah ada orang booking hehe...

Then, gambar kt bawah ni adalah Florence fennel.  This is my first time growing.  But it had been neglected lah.. kesian.  Yang besar satu je (tak besar sangat la).  I think the medium and the location tak berapa sesuai hence cenonet je. Tak pe lah, nnti cuba tanam lagi.  One thing I notice tentang Florence fennel adalah, dia tak de musuh and is quite hardy. Macam tak berapa terkesan dengan high humidy and panas hujan.  Ok lah...  Will definitely try to get a hold of more Florence fennel seeds...

Asparagus spear..

Cik asparagus ni, saya tanam dalam container.  Bawa balik dari New Zealand.  Dah dekat setahun pokok ni.. my mistake - pokoknya ada lima, tapi saya dumped the whole five plants dalam pot kecik (tapi panjang).  Obviously, these asparagus kena transplant - sebaik-baiknya kat atas Tanah dan kena separate each crown... tapi tengah berfikir lagi..I may transplant them kat pasu yang lebih besar.  Notice the latest spear tu?  Dah agak besar.  Again, that Baja busyuk memang make a difference...  Seriously ya'll.. Baja kedai dua hengget tu, errmmm.. better stick with the nursery recommended ones lah...

Then di bawah ni adalah my Aunt Ruby's German Green tomato.  Yep, it does not get red or yellow.  Bila dah masak dia akan slightly lembut, and kurang sikit ke-green-annya.  Ni buah peringkat ke-2. Peringkat pertama pokok ni hasilkan 10 biji, but most of them tak boleh dimakan sebab dah kena sengat dengan lalat buah.  Ada la sebjik dua yang edible.  Rasanya masam macam lemon but in a good way.  Actually, I never liked tomato. Tapi sejak tanam sendiri tomato ni, jadi suka sangat.  Serious!  My favourite so far (yang saya dah pernah tuai) adalah beefsteak dan sungold cherry.  So I suppose, tomato memang rasa berbeza bila dipetik dah masak bebetul.  And of course, different varieties have different taste. Tomato growing memang tricky jugak.  Sangat sensitive dengan diseases and pests. But I haven't given up yet so far.  I keep experimenting with the medium, location and care.

Gambar di atas ni adalah pokok epal Rose.  Buahnya saya beli di farmer'r market di New Zealand. I think I dah pernah la post pasal this apple.  Yep, this is how it looks like at 9 months old.  Saya tanam dalam pasu je buat masa ni.  Whether it will bear fruit is anybody's guess but I don't mind really.. Ok je...

And last but not least, is my red acre cabbage.  Belum lama transplant (tapi dah lama semai and neglected hehehe).  This one dah macam nak form 'ball' kot...  Alhamdulillah...  I gave away some of the seedlings to my aunt and my sister in law.  Tapi tak bertahan lama sebab kena makan dengan tikus.  Takde rezeki lah gamaknya.  So far yang saya tanam di sini masih ok dan intact.  Tikus takde lagi takat ni (jangan la datanggggg), mungkin sebab kucing banyak.. hehehe...

Sad day for Alpine Strawberry

So I started with 50 seeds in November 2013 and 80% of them sprouted.  Happy day.  All of the seedlings were sown in the flat terracotta pot placed in the shade - strawberries don't mind the shade. Then, bermula lah cerita... kucing cakar, ayam cakar, katak korek Tanah etc etc.. after which I would frantically fix and most of the time the strawberries would survive lah. After a few months, I transplanted the surviving strawberry plants in individual small baba pots - I think I initially had around 6-8 pots (out of the 40 sprouts hahaha)...

Gitu gini to make the story short, after almost 10 months, I am only left with 3 pasu. Tapi, strawberry akan beranak and now in each of the baba pot dah berpecah jadi 3 pokok.  Yesterday, one of the pots dah jadi macam ni...

And the culprit?  Sang siput babi.  Tak sangka siput babi berselera juga dengan daun strawberry.  So, I decided to take this particular plant ke dalam rumah. I am placing it by my window sill.  Walaupun sang siput dah makan most of the leaves, the crown is still intact.  And it seems that one new leaf is coming out.  Keeping my fingers crossed - I hope it will recover.

The other two pots?  Alhamdulillah, so far so good.
